Are Essential Oils Actually Safer Than Synthetic Fragrance?
Natural doesn't mean hypoallergenic. Here's what the allergy research, EU regulators, and veterinarians actually say about essential oils — and where they genuinely win.

If you’ve read anything else on this site, you know the premise: we prefer disclosed, plant-based formulas over the mystery blend hiding behind the word “fragrance.” So this post might sound like it’s arguing against our own picks. It isn’t. It’s arguing against a shortcut a lot of clean-living sites take — the assumption that “essential oil” means “safe” the way “synthetic” supposedly means “risky.”
That assumption doesn’t survive contact with the research. “Natural” has no legal definition in fragrance, same as “clean” — and the molecules regulators worry about most show up on both sides of the natural/synthetic line.
Essential oils are chemicals — the same chemicals
Lavender oil isn’t one substance. It’s a mixture of dozens of compounds, and the two biggest — linalool and linalyl acetate — are the exact same molecules a synthetic perfumer would buy from a supplier. Limonene, the smell of every citrus oil, is one of the most produced fragrance chemicals in the world. Your body can’t tell whether a linalool molecule came from a Bulgarian lavender field or a reactor in New Jersey, because there is no difference to detect.
So the question was never natural versus synthetic chemicals. It’s which chemicals, at what dose, disclosed or not.
The allergy problem nobody puts on the label
Here’s the part the aromatherapy sites skip: limonene and linalool oxidize on contact with air into hydroperoxides that are substantially more allergenic than the fresh compounds. That half-used bottle of citrus oil that’s been open for a year is a different substance than the day you bought it. In patch-test studies of dermatitis patients, oxidized linalool and oxidized limonene produce positive reactions in roughly 5 to 7 percent of people tested — and these two compounds appear in the overwhelming majority of essential oils.
The EU takes this seriously enough that its fragrance allergen labeling list — the one requiring named disclosure on cosmetic labels — was expanded in 2023 from 26 substances to more than 80, with compliance deadlines starting this year. Scan that list and you’ll notice something: a large share of the entries are components of natural materials. Citronellol, geraniol, eugenol, farnesol — a plain rose absolute carries several named EU allergens all by itself.
When regulators restrict “natural” harder than synthetic
Two examples worth knowing. Cold-pressed bergamot oil contains bergapten, a compound that makes skin dramatically more reactive to sunlight — real chemical burns, not a metaphor. The fragrance industry’s own safety body limits bergamot to 0.4 percent in leave-on products destined for sun-exposed skin, and bergapten to 15 parts per million. That’s a tighter leash than most synthetics get.
The second is oakmoss, a natural perfume material used for a century. Two of its native molecules, atranol and chloroatranol, turned out to be among the most potent contact allergens in all of fragrance — enough that the EU banned them outright, with the phase-out completed in 2021. The “natural” version of oakmoss is the one that got prohibited; the cleaned-up, processed version is the one you’re allowed to sell.
The diffuser and the cat
One more thing that belongs in any honest essential oil safety piece: cats lack a liver enzyme (glucuronyl transferase) needed to metabolize compounds concentrated in many essential oils. Tea tree, eucalyptus, peppermint, citrus, and pine oils are all flagged by the ASPCA — and diffusers put those compounds in the air and, eventually, on fur that gets groomed off. If you run a diffuser in a small closed room with a cat, you’re dosing the cat. Keep diffused spaces ventilated and give pets a way to leave the room.
So why do we still prefer them?
Because the honest case for essential oils was never “zero risk.” It’s disclosure. A candle scented with lavender oil tells you what you’re breathing; a candle scented with “fragrance” tells you nothing, and the loophole that allows that is the reason this site exists. Essential oils also sidestep the phthalate question entirely — no fixative chemistry, which is why they fade faster, and why we treat that fade as a fair trade.
But swap the halo for the actual rule: dilute anything going on skin, respect citrus oils in the sun, replace oxidized bottles instead of using them up, and don’t fog a closed room your pets can’t leave. “Natural” is a sourcing claim, not a safety claim. The back of the label is still the only part telling the truth.
